Mini Autobiographical Sketch Born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio and moved to Bexley, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus prior to school age - attended school in Bexley with an almost unchanged group of students from the first grade through High School graduation - carried papers (The Columbus Dispatch) via bicycle peddle power for six years beginning in the 6th grade (at that time the daily paper sold for 1 cent and the carrier got half of that--the Sunday paper sold for 10 cents out of which the carrier got 2 cents and with my 100 customers I thought I had found a gold mine, and it was at this time when I learned the value of a consistent stream of earnings.
Following high school graduation, enrolled at Ohio State University and was able to complete the freshman year before being drafted for WWII on the following April Fools Day - I always thought that this was a trick and they really didn't mean it. They didn't agree.
Entered the Aviation Cadets Program of the Army Air Force (a separate Air Force Service arm had not yet been created) - graduated as a pilot (and 2nd Lt.) and flew the B-25 (a light bomber - the type Gen. Jimmy Doolittle used to lead a Squadron of 25's in a take-off from a carrier and making the first bombing attack on Tokyo) and the B-24 (a heavy bomber also known as the Flying Boxcar -- and it flew like one) -- had crew assigned and ready to go overseas when the atomic bomb was dropped and the war was over – disappointed in not getting into combat which is an indication of the maturity level at that time.

| The preceding is a picture of my crew ready for deployment with one of our B-24s in the background. I am the hatless one in the front row with hair (the good old days). What I didn't know at that time was that although the sun was lovely, particularly at higher altitudes, I was setting up my future skin doctor with his annual Mercedes upgrade. |
