Longevity

Longevity

By Charlie Crumley Dedicated to Understanding

April 2005

My Daughter lived in Florida in the 70s and about once a month my wife and I would drive down for a weekend. The route was always the same and involved going down Interstate 75. Someplace north of the Florida line was an Exit that had somehow escaped development to the apparent displeasure of the local land owners. A local FM Station was about to discontinue operation and was snapped up by some local realtors to broadcast up and down 75 to attract business. They also put up interesting signs along 75 to attract listeners and over the years this Exit has become a major point at which to stop.

Of course the broadcasting content of those new-to-broadcasting realtors has now been severely changed (not necessarily improve) to adapt to their new commercial status. But I miss their early days of improvised and crudely constructed time filling broadcasts. For example -

MC: Tell me Mr. Oldie, being a senior senior, what have you been up to for all of these years .

Oldie: Well Sonnie (and Oldie spins a long time filling yarn about his life) .

MC: that's fantastic, but tell me, to what do you attribute your longevity .

 Oldie: What's that?

 MC: Your long life .

Oldie: Oh, that. Well Sonnie, there are three things that have contributed to

my longevity, as you call it. These are-

First, I have never smoked. That stuff is bad .

Second, moderation -- particularly booze .

But the most important thing, is the avoidance of natural causes.

I laughed all the way to the border, and am still chuckling.
